Reasons to Make The Change
Currently, the deodorant industry produces over 15 million pounds of plastic waste each year*. We may try and recycle our old roll-ons, but sadly it doesn't always happen. The roller dial and cap are often a different plastic to the tube. This means they need to be completely disassembled to avoid recycling contamination.
If you think that’s ok, I use an aerosol and not a roll on, I’m afraid there’s bad news there too. Aerosol canisters are made from metals that can be recycled if they are completely empty. Unfortunately, due to leftover liquid or gas and the pressurised propellant inside, they often end up being classified as hazardous waste.
And it doesn’t stop there. While aerosols no longer contain ozone layer destroying CFCs, they now contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A University of York study showed that these are still a problem. According to the report, household aerosols now emit more harmful VOC air pollution than all the vehicles in the UK. If you keep them trapped in enclosed spaces VOCs can be damaging to human health. Release them outside, and they can have a devastating effect on wildlife and agriculture.
